Soft Sax

Back to the sax player. I brought back the painting I'd been working on from Monday and eliminated most of the edges to refocus the painting. The result was what I'd hoped for!

The close up portrait was done once I'd realized that I needed to stop messing with the other painting.

Sax vs. Quiet

After a very short session painting the sax player again, I became envious of my friend Marybeth who was sketching a mason jar with some water in it.

The model with the saxophone is a bit too interested in the painters, breaking his pose frequently to comment on things or tune into conversations in the studio.

I like the quiet mason jar.

Sax, Acrylic Paint

I had a loaner car while my car was in the shop, so I didn't want to risk carrying a wet oil painting around. I took acrylic paint with me today to the studio. There's a definite physical challenge to pushing drying paint around and finding the perfectly mixed color is solid as a rock on the palette because the model took a break.

Still, I can't argue with the energy from all that physical effort that made it onto the painting.

Victory over the Violin

Scroll down -- you'll see how my violinist has changed. I was just going to leave the earlier version and use that canvas for an underpainting for the future. But there was the model again. I didn't paint from this photo -- it was taken from the same vantage point as my easel, so you can see the pose i was working from. Among the many things I changed, I reoriented his gaze toward me. Somehow, putting that vision in the painting made the connection that was missing.

Violin Lesson

I don't pick these poses. I guess a serious violinist might pick up his instrument before buttoning his shirt?
